Skin Tag, Mole & Milia Removal

About skin tag, mole & milia removal

Skin tags are small, soft, skin-coloured growths that hang off the skin and look a bit like warts. They’re very common, harmless and can vary in colour and size – from a few millimetres up to 5cm. They are made up of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin. Collagen is a normal type of protein found throughout the body. Common in both men and women and usually found on the neck, armpits, around the groin or under the breasts. They can also grow on the eyelids or under the folds of the buttocks.

Moles are a skin growth that develop when pigment producing cells grow in groups. They most frequently appear as small, dark spots on your skin but can also appear in a varied range of colours, shapes and sizes.

Milia, also known as “milk spots” are small, white cysts on your skin brought on by trapped, dead skin cells which don’t fall away. The most common place to find milia is on the face and skin damage or specific skin care products may be to blame for this.

Removal is a relatively simple process using cryotherapy and cauterization at South Coast Aesthetic Clinic. Sometimes, however, a referral may be necessary to a dermatologist or a surgeon for the area to be looked at more closely before removal.

What happens during the treatment?

Preparation

At your first visit, a detailed consultation with Jolanta (our registered Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner, NIP) will give you a clear understanding of what and how it can be achieved. Jolanta will explain how this treatment will benefit you and what you can expect.

A medical history will be taken to make sure that there are no reasons why you are not suited for the treatment. If you choose to go ahead, you will be asked to sign a consent form indicating that you have understood how the treatment works and potential side effects.

Depending on the size of the area you wish to treat, an additional follow-up visit may be recommended to confirm that all the concerned tissue has disappeared.

“Before and after” photographs may be taken to show how successful your treatment has been.

The treatment

The cryotherapy treatment uses a highly pressurised, fine jet of nitrous oxide from the tip of the instrument such as a “cryo pen”, making the treatment incredibly precise.

This fine jet of gas destroys tissue by freezing the intracellular fluid, forming ice shards that rapture the cell membrane, destroying the cell. The penetration of the cold is approximately 1mm per 5 seconds of treatment so a 2mm sized lesion would take 10 seconds of nitrous oxide gas to treat.

During the treatment you may see a layer of frost on top of the treated area. This is part of the process and shouldn’t cause any concern as it should also disappear within seconds.

The cauterization method uses a “cautery pen” on a skin tag which is burnt off. This causes the skin tag to fall off while sealing the wound to prevent infection or bleeding.
